Thoughts:
“People don’t ghost you because they hate your product. They ghost you because life is loud. Follow-up cuts through the noise.”
“Your customer has a short memory. Your follow-up is the reminder that makes you money.”
“One extra call can turn a ghosted order into a paid order. Don’t stop at ‘failed delivery’. Follow until they decide.”
He Said “Sorry, I Forgot I Even Ordered It”
After 3 days of WhatsApp messages, missed calls, and late-night follow-up voice notes… the guy finally picked up.
And you know what he said?
“Ah… I forgot I even ordered it.”
Omo. You see this thing called Payment on Delivery?
If you no follow up, you’re playing yourself.
Not because the customer doesn’t want the product…
But because Nigerians are BUSY. Distracted. Overwhelmed.
Too many things are fighting for their brain.
Your product is not the only thing they’re thinking about.
Even if they liked it when they ordered… They’ll forget.
Or worse… Something else will steal their attention.
And once that window closes?
You’ve lost that sale.
Lost the delivery fee.
Lost the ROI on that ad.
Lost the time and stress.
All because you were scared to be “too forward.”
If you’re doing Ecommerce in Nigeria and you’re not following up aggressively…
You’re donating money to Facebook and calling it marketing.
You think customers will remember to buy just because you chatted with them once?
Lol. You’re not their pastor. You’re not their mother. You’re not even on their mind.
They will forget.
You too forget when you order things online.
That’s why follow-up is not begging. It’s business.
It’s not disturbing. It’s discipline.
If you treat it like disturbance, you will lose money. Every day.
How to stop your customers from ghosting you
1. Follow-Up Is Not Harassment. It’s Customer Service
Nigerians don’t hate follow-up. They hate poorly done follow-up.
You sending “Just checking in” once is not follow-up. It’s laziness.
The average buyer has a 5–7 day window where they’re hot.
After that, they move on.
That’s why I tell my clients: morning + night.
Call in the morning.
If they don’t reply, send SMS or voice note.
Switch channels. Stay consistent.
You’re not disturbing them.
You’re helping them remember they said they wanted something.
Same way GTB will send you 3 emails and 2 texts to remind you about their offer.
They’re not playing with their money. Why should you?
(And by the way, this alone can boost your delivery rate by 30% or more. I’ve seen it happen with students inside ESL.)
If you want to be lazy with follow-up, just forget Ecommerce.
Now here’s where it gets more important…
2. The Buying Window Is Like Hot Akara – It Doesn’t Wait
You know how akara tastes best when it’s fresh? Same thing with customer desire.
There’s a short window where they’re still excited, hopeful, and emotionally ready to pay.
Miss that window?
Cold akara.
They’ll start thinking of bills.
Or their friend will recommend another product.
Or they’ll start doubting if they need it at all.
Follow-up is what keeps the akara hot.
It keeps the excitement alive.
And that’s the only way they’ll still pay when your dispatch shows up at their gate.
Most of you are letting your akara go cold. Then you wonder why customers ghost you.
Wake up. Time is your enemy here.
But there’s one more thing people ignore…
3. WhatsApp Is Good – But Don’t Marry It
Too many people are WhatsApp-only warriors.
They message once. Wait. Wait some more.
Then complain that “people are not serious.”
No.
You are not serious.
If you truly want that sale, you go multi-channel.
Call them. Send voice notes. SMS still works. Even email sef if you got it.
One of my students got a ₦105k order revived just because he called after WhatsApp didn’t deliver.
You think you’re disturbing?
Jumia. Konga. Standard Chartered. Your bank. Your insurance.
They are everywhere. And they are rich for a reason.
You too must act like your money is on the line.
Because it is.
And that’s exactly what we drill into our students inside ESL…
